Source and transcription

[recensere]

Hi there, I think it is going to be much easier to transcribe from Liber:Foenix. Domini Petri Ravennatis memoriae magistri - (Petrus) (IA hin-wel-all-00002799-001).pdf - the text is just a little bit clearer.

In terms of transcription tools, I just tried the Transkribus OCR tool that Wikisource provide, selecting la-in (Latin Incunabula) as the transcription model. It seems to work very well on the book above, all considering. I suggest we go with that. JimKillock (disputatio) 13:33, 30 Iunii 2025 (UTC)Reply

Todo list: table and list pages, chapter divisions

[recensere]

Hi there,

Here is a list of formatting jobs, that are not about Latin checking, so need no Latin to complete:

  • Split book into chapters ✔
  • Add marginalia using Formula:Marginalia dextra, ie {{Marginalia dextra|Note text}}; the text is currently usually at the top or bottom of the page, should be placed near to actual note position on scan
  • Contents pages ✔
  • Pages with lists in columns
  • Complicated multi-column pages with text in multiple directions, reversed etc ✔

On the second, these might need to be graphics rather than tables? JimKillock (disputatio) 10:07, 5 Iulii 2025 (UTC)Reply

Split book into chapters

[recensere]

Quick comment, I would not bother with the sub index pages for each Tractatus, such as Tractatus Primus, these can be the same as the first chapter page, eg Capitulum 1, without links to chapters, as these do not occur in the book except at the start. The main (top level) book page will need all the links as above of course. This can be based on the index pages provided by the book, ideally.--JimKillock (disputatio) 06:46, 12 Iulii 2025 (UTC)Reply

I will update it to display the title of each chapter
  • Capitulum 1 => De possibilitate necessitate et vtilitate artis memoratiue
Tractatus Primus

I would simply merge these, or ignore the top level. It's great to have the hierarchy as we have all these Capitula, but the book makes no use of the Tractati division otherwise, For navigational purposes, the Tractatus pages are not needed, and distract (create extra clicks). I'll amend and show how I would recomment we do this. JimKillock (disputatio) 09:12, 12 Iulii 2025 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I've reorganised that, so that the second level Tractati simply redirect to the Capitulum 1, and Capitulum 1 links back to the last Capitulum of the Tractatus that precededed.
I would also make sure the navigation appears at the foot of the page, If you are reading the text, this helps a lot. JimKillock (disputatio) 09:26, 12 Iulii 2025 (UTC)Reply
The letters and so on is a bit confusing, as the final letter is after the contents pages. It might be as well to have all the introductory contents on the top page, and navigate straight to Congestorium Artificiosae Memoriae/Tractatus Primus/Capitulum 1 JimKillock (disputatio) 10:47, 12 Iulii 2025 (UTC)Reply
Understood. I’ll proceed with splitting the remainder of Tractatus Quartus. 2A00:5400:E139:99B:29A4:9FA9:87DE:CA82 11:54, 12 Iulii 2025 (UTC)Reply
Note that the first set of pages also are missing a closing </div> to match the opening <div class=text> - I have added to the first few but not all JimKillock (disputatio) 15:54, 12 Iulii 2025 (UTC)Reply

It seems better to leave those pages as they are (62 and 63) and create a separate table of contents. 2A00:5400:E139:99B:39E0:C:9592:7DF3 14:22, 12 Iulii 2025 (UTC)Reply
I rejigged the pages a bit, not ideal to reorder perhaps, but sensible probably. We can adjust the formatting also. JimKillock (disputatio) 19:13, 12 Iulii 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much. This has made it significantly easier to work on. Now, you can focus on one chapter at a time—perhaps start with the shorter one.2A00:5400:E139:99B:FD01:1824:A52E:B479 04:18, 13 Iulii 2025 (UTC)Reply
I will probably just proceed from start to end, that helps make most sense of it as a reading project. But it will be quite slow work I suspect, although Ai tools can speed up interpretation quite a bit. Once done tho, it really ought to be checked against the recent academic version, which is significant extra work, but a good way to ensure accuracy. What do you think about splitting the Foenix book into chapters? 82.167.150.133 02:23, 19 Iulii 2025 (UTC)Reply

Thanks btw for pulling out the marginalia. Some of these pages are very heavy going, just to manage expectations. Sometimes they take me 20 mins, sometimes 2-3 hours with breaks. I am using chatGPT to check or suggest some of the expansions where I cannot easily understand what they should be. Sometimes I don't agree with btw, it tends to grammatical accuracy where it seems likely this was not always meant, so we will need to check against the academic copy sooner or later JimKillock (disputatio) 20:22, 21 Iulii 2025 (UTC)Reply
I will try to do all marginalia 37.106.199.246 23:56, 21 Iulii 2025 (UTC)Reply
