Columns or not?
[recensere]Hi there, noting on page 20-21 or thereabouts you are setting the pages with columns. Assuming you output the pages to a web page, how will this work?
I would suggest just ignoring the columns and output the page to a consecutive text, so that it can be rendered into a single web page per chapter / section. This is the normal pracitce on Wikisource AIUI. cc to @User:Laura1822 @User:ShakespeareFan00 @User:Samuele2002 JimKillock (disputatio) 17:45, 15 Iunii 2025 (UTC)
- @JimKillock: Great minds think alike! I was researching this issue today, trying to find if there is a way to indicate optional hyphenation because the narrow columns obviously do no work. I confirmed over at English WS that columns should be ignored unless there is a reason (e.g., Latin/English parallel columns). Here, I agree, life will be simpler without the columns. I therefore was coming to this page to make a note that I'm about to eliminate the columns, and found your note! Thank you! Laura1822 (disputatio) 20:25, 15 Iunii 2025 (UTC)
- I fixed the couple of pages I had done myself (300-302, the beginning of the Order of Mass). How long should I wait before taking it upon myself to edit pp. 20-21 to remove the table/column formatting? Laura1822 (disputatio) 22:35, 15 Iunii 2025 (UTC)
- I think given that English WS have confirmed it is not normal, and there has been little work on the document, you should just go ahead. I expect the first editor had not thought this through. JimKillock (disputatio) 22:57, 15 Iunii 2025 (UTC)
- Great, I will try to get to it today. Thanks! Laura1822 (disputatio) 12:50, 16 Iunii 2025 (UTC)
- Are you hoping to do more work on this? If so I will look out for any second proofing needed etc JimKillock (disputatio) 16:41, 16 Iunii 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you, that would be great! I am afraid I work very slowly, though. I want to get the complete Order of Mass done, as a priority, but that is actually a small part of a complete Missale Romanum.
- I spent some time the other day looking for more recent and/or easier to work with editions of this to work on instead, but most of them are very elaborate (decorated) and I am not convinced that they would really be any "better" or easier than this one, except of course for the minor revisions made between 1862 and circa 1950. (The first significant changes came in 1955.) I haven't studied these in depth.
- I see that you are primarily a classicist, but are you interested in medieval Latin? I also started working on a prayer book from 1495. Fortunately I found a really good modern book that catalogs all of the manuscript abbreviations and elisions, or I'd be even more lost! But again, I work very, very slowly! - Mostly I work on Neo-Latin texts, not so much Classical Latin. Happy to help on anything that is being done actively.I would be glad to help with proofing anything as it is much less work than transcription. JimKillock (disputatio) 01:41, 17 Iunii 2025 (UTC)
