No apology is needed for certain very obvious licences (such as the use of "vigil" for a "policeman") when it is remembered that the plays are only school exercises and do not pretend to historical accuracy, though it is hoped that there are no very glaring inaccuracies. Nor does the use of verses from Horace, and Catullus need to be defended; it is good for the boys and can seem like sacrilege only to an over fastidious mind.
