Salve and all that! [recensere]

Thanks for the welcome. I preferred your welcomes at WS and WP, though - the links you supplied were more useful, or at least, there were more of them! ;-) Stratford490 13:52, 23 Iunii 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the extra links! Stratford490 21:57, 23 Iunii 2008 (UTC)

Caseolos [recensere]

Hi, John. Thank you for the kind messages. It will be nice to have someone with access to tools around here more frequently. I have felt quite alone here and have frequently wondered if the project had been abandoned. With so much available online through Google books and the larger research libraries, I thought that the Vicifons moment may have come and gone and that I might be wasting my time.

I have been working mostly on the 14th century humanist poet Pontano, who has next to no online presence; but also on Catullus, whose online footprint is much larger-- far too large, in my opinion, on en.wikipedia. I have not yet looked into djvu files but gather that I should. I have quite a few questions for you once you get settled in. Regards, Aramgar 15:50, 23 Iunii 2008 (UTC)

I have been intending to come over here for a while, but I needed to
I agree that Catullus is too prominent, but it mirrors the real world, where AP Latin Lit. is the most common reason people learn Latin. It is important that we have very good work for AP Latin Lit. authors, as these pages will be the most visited. As a result, I have set up Liber:The poems of Gaius Valerius Catullus - Francis Warre Cornish.djvu, so readers can compare our texts with a printed edition, and this is the only one that I could find quickly which is public domain in all countries. Half of the remaining pages to be created are the Latin. If we can create those, I can quickly create the other half of the pages using a bot.
I could not find any pagescans contains works by Pontano; only brief mentions. John Vandenberg 11:57, 1 Iulii 2008 (UTC)

Could you recommend a tutorial on how to format poetry on djvu. I understand there are problems in this area. Better yet, if you would yourself format a page of the Hymni, I could copy that. Thanks. Aramgar 03:03, 1 Iulii 2008 (UTC)

The simplest way to format poetry is to add "<poem>" and "</poem>" around a block of formatted text, as I did here. see en:Help:Poetry. 11:57, 1 Iulii 2008 (UTC)

Words split across pages [recensere]

Hi John. I'm beginning to work my way through the work you set me, as a "gentle introduction" to wikisource! :-) I should actually post this to your en-wikisource page, I suppose, as this is a general question, but as it was a Latin page, I'll post here. See here. I validated it, but the word at the end is split between two pages. I note when a page is split between lines, wikisource editors reform the word. What happens when a word is split between pages? Surely if people search a text for that word, it will not appear on the search? Carcharoth 06:36, 6 Iulii 2008 (UTC)

I also noticed that "page 18" is not going green at Liber:De assensione Stoici quid senserint.djvu, even after refreshing my cache. Hang on. A null edit fixed that, though I could have waited for the job queue to refresh the template call, presumably, Carcharoth 06:44, 6 Iulii 2008 (UTC)
On the Liber page, there is a link called "Pages" which purges the page, forcing the page to be refreshed. John Vandenberg 08:20, 6 Iulii 2008 (UTC)
The simple approach is to put the word on either of the two pages. The search problem is solved when the pages are joined together, which I will show you later. Recently I have set up a more complex approach on English Wikisource; see en:Template:Hyphenated word start and en:Template:Hyphenated word end. p.s. I check all of my Wikisource talk pages regularly, and prefer messages to be on the local project, so that normal wiki links can be used. John Vandenberg 08:20, 6 Iulii 2008 (UTC)
OK. I'd better list all the wikisource projects I edit in on my en-wikisource page. Sometimes I think a global watchlist and/or contributions log would be great. At other times, it is nice to take a break from one project and work in another. Carcharoth 10:57, 6 Iulii 2008 (UTC)

Bot needed [recensere]

Dear John,

I need a bot to get rid of an obsolete template: When a text is divided in many pages on it.source we unce used a template to make a discussion subpage point to the main discussion page having source information. Then we relized the existence of transclusion, and got rid of the template with a simple mass substitution.

What on it.source was done more than a year ago wasn't done here: would you please take these pagelist and replace

\{\{OperisInfoNexus\|

with

\{\{disputatio:

to obtain this?

Once performed this mass replacement Formula:OperisInfoNexus can be deleted.

Thank you in advance - εΔω 17:09, 11 Iulii 2008 (UTC)

I'll take this to Vicifons:Scriptorium. John Vandenberg 04:30, 12 Iulii 2008 (UTC)

Thank you [recensere]

... very much for your welcome. I will paste many texts here and if you need some help on maintenance, just call ;-) (I'm sysop on the es-wiki) Best regards, --RoyFocker 13:49, 15 Octobris 2008 (UTC)

Thanx you too (if you need help, I’m sysop on Commons and fr.wiki). Cdlt, VIGNERON 13:11, 10 Decembris 2009 (UTC)

Lack of editors and admins [recensere]

As shown by Specialis:Nuper_mutata, there are days without any edits at all, and very few days have a double-digit number of edits. Also, there seem be very few admins, according to Vicifons:Magistratus (which seems to have been vandalized indirectly at Vicifons:Administratores). --Matthead 23:34, 22 Decembris 2009 (UTC)

Can I nominate you to become an admin? John Vandenberg 02:42, 23 Decembris 2009 (UTC)
Oh, well, yes, sure. Is there a "how-to" for the Vicifons mop somewhere? --Matthead 01:38, 25 Decembris 2009 (UTC)
I have nominated you. There is no how-to. Small wikis rely on common sense, ideas from other wikis, and discussion where disagreement is probable. John Vandenberg 04:21, 25 Decembris 2009 (UTC)

re: sysop [recensere]

Ave,

Fasciculus:Accueil scribe.png is now on Commons (with the same name), could you delete it ? Cdlt, VIGNERON 22:19, 26 Iunii 2010 (UTC)

Thanx. Cdlt, VIGNERON 00:24, 1 Iulii 2010 (UTC)

PS: is special:Import activate now for fr ? (i’m waiting for this tool for Liber:Satires d'Horace et de Perse.djvu)

la.ws only supports import from meta and commons. I will ask about this. John Vandenberg 09:07, 28 Iunii 2010 (UTC)
I ask to OrbiliusMagister (talkcontribs) some times ago, he answered me that it was in progress (but I dont remember waht exactly and where he asnwer me…). Cdlt, VIGNERON 00:24, 1 Iulii 2010 (UTC)

Dies est laetitiae [recensere]

Thank you for welcoming me. I'm mostly active in the swedish Wikisource. Today I've been searching for deeper information about "En jungfru födde ett barn idag" (A virgin gave birth to a child today), a wellknown christmas carrol. In latin the title is said to be Dies est laetitiae, by a cadinal Johan Bona. The history about this song is also that it's said to be a medivival gregorian song. Do you no anything else? The german title is "Ein Kinderlein so löberlich". Could the venetian poet Giovanni Bona be responsibel? --IP7869 17:14, 27 Iunii 2010 (UTC)

User, Usor, or Usores [recensere]

John, the babel template include a category for {{ns:user}} which in our case means "Usor:" but Vicifons:Babel/Linguae assumes grammatically more correct "Usores" (even though all English projects appear to use the singular "user" and many non-English projects even use the English); however, only Categoria:Usores en and company exist. The individual babel language user boxes link to "Category:User x" explicitly which makes things slightly more troublesome as some of these have been created. I suggest the best solution is to redirect all instances of User -> Usor and change the Linguae page to call for "Usor"; then create all the Categoria:Usor X cats. All references to Categoria:Usores should be eliminated. The alternative is to bot all Babel templates to have references to Usores with redirects from all possible User or Usor cats, which seems to me more trouble than the grammar warrants. Does my plan make sense?--Doug.(Disputatio Conlationes) 21:09, 16 Februarii 2011 (UTC)

  • An exception is it.ws, which uses "utente" for the links but "utenti" for the user categories; the singular and English named cats do not exist. We could do this, I just don't know as it's worth the trouble.--Doug.(Disputatio Conlationes) 21:19, 16 Februarii 2011 (UTC)

The babel userboxes on la.ws are a mess. We were hoping that a proposed extension would be installed. I think it was discussed on our Scriptorium. John Vandenberg 00:17, 17 Februarii 2011 (UTC)

Forced user renames coming soon for SUL [recensere]

Hi, sorry for writing in English. I'm writing to ask you, as a bureaucrat of this wiki, to translate and review the notification that will be sent to all users, also on this wiki, who will be forced to change their user name on May 27 and will probably need your help with renames. You may also want to help with the pages m:Rename practices and m:Global rename policy. Thank you, Nemo 16:49, 3 Maii 2013 (UTC)
