PKEFACE. xlix to the bishop about the affair, saying he "would not suffer this wickedness to pass unpunished, " quia plagas fratrum " nee debemus nee possumus sine lacrymis tolerare."^ In his mandate he threatens all the officials of the priory — tlie prior, subprior, sacrist, prsecentor, cellarer, sub- cellarer, and cook — with the greater excommunication, and the church with an interdict, unless they restoi'e the bofly. The bishop accordingly held an inquisition on the wish of the deceased and on the supposed injury to the friars (p. 503), and found that it was his last Avish to be buried in S.
