Postrēmō tamen in colōniam incolumis reductus, Faber posteā per lītora omnia iter fēcit; spērābat enim semper sē flūmen esse inventūrum[1], quō[2] Americam trānsīre et ita ad Asiam pervenīre posset. In itineribus et dux et mīlitēs[3] noctū saepe frīgora maxima[4] ferre cōgēbantur; tum[5], remōtō[6] ignī et haud procul collocātō, humī[7] iacēre solēbant eōdem locō[8], ubi ignis modo fuerat. Interdum[9] aquam dulcem[10] nōn habēbant, eōrumque pānis[11] fluctibus corruptus est[12].

Ōlim in eōs, cum prope lītus quoddam nāvigārent, ab incolīs sagittae subitō ex arboribus missae sunt; mīlitēs tamen, cum posteā in lītore eōsdem Indōs corbulās[13] manibus[14] tenentēs vīdissent, incolās velle frūmentum sibi dare crēdidērunt. Dux autem, īnsidiās veritus, mīlitēs iussit hostēs prius sonō armōrum terrēre; tum, cum Indī perterritī in silvās fūgissent, colōni ad lītus vēnērunt, et in harēnā dōna posuērunt multa. Quae[15] cum Indī invēnissent, gaudēbant, ac colōnis iam factī amīcī[16], frūmentum eīs libenter dedērunt.

  7. humī: on the ground; locative case.
  8. eōdem locō: the prepositions in and ex are often lacking with locō and locīs.

  10. dulcem: dulcis, -is, -e, fresh.
  11. panis (-is, m.): bread.
  12. corruptus est: corrumpō, 3, -rūpi, -ruptus, spoil.
  13. corbulās: corbula, -ae, f., basket.
  14. manibus: for syntax, cf. nāvibus, p. 6, l. 10.
  15. quae: these (noun).
  16. factī amīcī: freely, becoming friendly (factī from fiō). English often uses a pres. part. where the perfect would be more exact.
